Foods Initiative

What We Do

Chairman Seki held community meetings in 2015 where community members requested access to local healthier foods. 4DD saw this demand as an opportunity to develop an agriculture industry as part of the local tribal economy. In 2016, 4DD began the development of the Red Lake Local Foods Initiative, now called Gitigaanike Foods Initiative. This initiative focuses on the development of food producers to help strengthen Red Lake Nation's food sovereignty.

The Gitigaanike Foods Initiative was created with the goals to decrease diet-related health issues, increase access to local healthy foods and develop a local foods economy. The Initiative incorporates community beliefs and attitudes about contemporary and traditional foods. To learn more, contact us at 218-679-IDEA.
